African Maths Initiative (AMI)
For several years we have worked with the African Maths Initiative (AMI), a Kenyan NGO formed by mathematicians and mathematics educators who are working to create a stronger mathematical community and culture across Africa. Stats4SD have mentored young AMI staff and have shared our training resources for statistics with them. This has been a win-win relationship where through our engagement Stats4SD contributes to the development of AMI and AMI enables us to reach many more people to promote capacity building in statistics and to contribute to development.
We have supported and accompanied the African Data Initiative launched by AMI in 2015, which is developing R-Instat, a software based on R, that is easy to use, even with low computer literacy. It encourages good statistical practices and learning. It is currently in its beta-version, and when released will be free and open source.
Stats4SD produce a number of e-Learning resources. These include the Statistics in Applied Climatology (SIAC) training courses, which give people working with climatic data the skills they need to use historical datasets effectively; and Statistics Made Simple (eSMS), developed by a group of experts within the SSC in response to a growing need for statistics training that focuses on the practical application of statistics.
